Sugar Gliders Gone Wild

Vash & Rikku apparently had a good time last night. Let me preface this by saying that I do know they could have been injured & I’m really glad they weren’t. We woke up this morning to find tiny bits of dog food scattered all over the kitchen. My first thought was that maybe one of our room mates stepped in it and tracked it all over. But then Ben realized that he had forgotten to lock the sugar glider cage last night. Vash & Rikku had apparently “escaped” from their unlocked cage, gotten into the dog food, found some sugar glider toys & a wheel that we had on the kitchen floor, probably partied all night, then dragged several small suggie toys back into their pouch in their cage & went to sleep. They must have stayed upstairs because otherwise I’m sure they would have fought with the glider trio downstairs. That could have been disastrous. But it looks like they had a good time with their grand adventure.

Long Time No Post!

Wow, ok so it has been a long time since I have posted. Vash & Rikku’s joeys are now 10 weeks OOP and are really fun to have around. One of them is sold and the other is still available as of right now. This weekend we’re going to a sugar glider gathering near Kansas City. We’re really excited about it. We are just getting ready to open our online store and have been busy repackaging products and getting them ready to sell. We’re kicking it off with a 15% off grand opening sale & will be taking our products with us to this event to sell a few there. This is kind of a fun hobby that we’re getting into. We will also be picking up 3 new gliders at this event that a breeder in Texas is bringing up to us. We are so excited about them. We’re putting them together as a breeding trio. The boy is a light platinum white mosaic pinto 50% leu het. The girls are a WFB 50% leu het and a WFB 33% leu het. We can’t wait to start seeing how pretty their babies are! Pics of the new trio will be posted soon. But here’s one pic we’ve uploaded of the mosaic boy:

Ok so that’s our biggest update. And now I have a few little stories about Vash & Rikku’s joeys.

We recently got a pop-up tent and we LOVE it. Click here to see and or buy one like it. We line the bottom with fleece, take all of our suggies in there (from the one colony), & let them have free-range to climb & jump as they please. The tent pops up & down in a matter of seconds…it is so easy! And the gliders love the play time & we don’t have to worry about them getting loose in our house & getting injured. It’s a win-win. Anyway, we had the gliders out in the tent a week ago & the joeys were really funny. We had a mug with some mealworms in the tent with us & one of the joeys took a nose-dive into it & then poked his little head out & just stared at us all cute-like. He didn’t eat the mealworms then…just sat on them. Then a little bit later, the other joey took a nose-dive into the mug & was desperately trying to get under his brother. Eventually, he poked his little head out all cute-like & then just sat there. It was really cute. And I got a picture!

Next story…Ok so we’ve been really bad/busy & haven’t had our gliders out of their cage for a few days. Last night I was going to take them out & I opened the cage door to put their food in there & one of the joeys really wanted to come out then, so I let him climb on me. They do that all the time, but it’s been a while since I’ve let them climb on me outside of the tent. Anyway, he climbed up & just sat on my shoulder while I was messing around with the tent & trying to figure out how to measure some fleece for the tent bottom & he never jumped off. Then I got frustrated with my fleece (long story) & I sat down & checked emails & he just sat there on my shoulder. He didn’t even care when the dog was trying to sniff at him. At one point he did jump onto the dog, which I thought would be a total disaster, but she stayed calm while I pulled him off of her. He then went over & sat on Ben for a while. He was just so good! I mean I knew he was tame like that but since lately we’ve mostly had them out free-ranging inside the tent, I really didn’t expect him to stay on my body so well. It was awesome.

Oh yeah & then later I got out a cricket & put it in a container in the cage & Rikku (the mom) snatched that sucker up lightning fast. Then that same joey ran over & yanked a leg off of it & stole it & started munching on it. We haven’t fed the joeys crickets, so I was a little surprised by him being so interested in it. Then he tried to steal the whole thing from his mom & they were playing tug of war with it. Then while she was chewing, he started trying to get some out of her mouth. It looked like they were making out. It was so cute! I was cracking up.

Ok that’s all for the stories for now. Hopefully I’ll find time to start blogging more regularly.

Babies are Out of Pouch and Eyes are Open!

Pictures coming soon! I think Rikku kept the babies stuffed in her pouch a little longer this time. One joey was out of pouch on 3/3 and we finally saw both of them out of pouch on 3/6. They already both had their eyes open on 3/10. We think they may have been out of pouch a little earlier than what we saw, but they were always either eating or Rikku was stuffing them back in there, so we never saw them detached from the nipple before then. Anyway, it’s like deja vu! We have 2 grey males again (66% het for leucistic). They’re very sweet so far (aside from occasionally trying to feed on each other). Now that their eyes are open, they’re a little scared when we first start holding them, but they do calm down. Rikku & Vash are doing a great job so far.

Joey Update

Rikku is getting huge! That’s all….just kidding (although not really). She’s keeping the joeys pretty well hidden for now. We keep hoping we’ll see some tails poking out, but nothing so far. There should be joeys out of pouch in a few weeks though. We’re pretty excited about it.

A few days ago, we got out a glass votive candle holder & put some crickets in it & some rocks on top. Rikku had a fun time digging the crickets out & eating them. Vash didn’t seem to care much about them. We just learned this weekend that there’s a bit of an aflatoxin scare with crickets, so I guess we’ll have to stop feeding them for now. We’re actually talking to someone about aflatoxin-free crickets & may eventually end up selling them on our new website. Oh…I don’t think I mentioned I started a new website with my friend Arren. The purpose of the website is to help educate people about pet sugar gliders. Eventually, we want it to be a one-stop resource for sugar glider information. The website address is http://www.sweet-sugar-gliders.com. So far, we have quite a bit of diet information on there & are working on some other pages. We are constantly adding new content & are starting to get quite a bit of traffic. I’m really excited about it.

New Website

I’ve been working on a new sugar glider website with my friend Arren. We don’t have a ton of content up yet, but it’s really coming along. So far, it’s mostly diet information. This new website is designed to eventually be your ultimate suggie resource guide – kind of a one-stop shop for sugar glider information. I’m really excited about it. You can view the website at http://www.sweet-sugar-gliders.com.

More Babies on the Way!!!

Rikku has babies in pouch again for sure. We’ve been suspecting, but it’s starting to get pretty obvious. We’re thinking we’ll be seeing them in a few weeks. We’re really excited about it.

Empty Nesting

The joeys went home with their new parents on Christmas Eve, so we’re down to just our two suggies again (and our little dog). It’s kind of weird not having them around. Their new mommy has been great about giving me updates though. It’s great to hear how well they’re adjusting to their new home. I added some more pictures that we took of them while they were here (in the “Litter 1″ link on the right in the pictures section). Below is a picture of the cage & glider kitchen that Ben made for them, along with the pouch, toy, and rope that I made for them.

Wow, We’re Busy!

We’ve really gotten behind on the joey updates.  We’ve just been so busy lately!  The joeys are doing really well.  They’re getting huge!  I’ll try to add some updated pictures to their photo album soon.  The babies are still very sweet & are eating well on their own.  They’ll be going to their new family on Christmas Eve.  I don’t think we could have timed that any better!

As a side note…seeing the size of our joeys at almost 8 weeks old has re-emphasized the truth for us about the Perfect Pocket Pets people that travel to state fairs and home & garden shows.  They are most definitely selling their babies too young.  I had heard that about them & believed it, but it has really hit home as we’ve seen our joeys developing.  There is now way I would take those babies from their parents any earlier than 8 weeks.  It disgusts me that people would engage in such horrible practices.

On a lighter note….Ben’s been making a cage for the new owners & I’m making some accessories for them.  It’s kind of fun.  We have extra PVC-coated wire if anyone local needs a cage made for them.  We’re actually thinking about making a larger cage for our babies, but we’ll have to buy some wider wire if we do that.  We’re also considering selling our house, so we may wait & see what kind of space we have where we end up first.

If I don’t blog again before then, Merry Christmas everyone!
